We're newbies and looking for our first Class A. Basically, we're looking for something around $25K and have been looking at the following locally: 1993 Winnebago Vectra 34', 1998 Rexhall Vision 34; 1993 Bounder 31A, 1992 Itasca Sunflyer 32, 1997 Hurricane 33SL; 1997 Fleetwood Southwind 32WBQ.
I realize that this isn't much to go on, but at a gut level does anyone have any thoughts on these units....or any other suggestions?
Bob, dunno if you're looking for a slide in that price range, but i've seen several of the rexhalls with them for around that. the vectras are nice, our neighbor has one and loves it. you might google a site for the rv recalls, i know there's one, just can't remember where it is. i know some of the fleetwoods are listed there with problems. not fond of bounders, have a couple of coworkers with them, they both want to sell and get something else - haven't said why.
main thing is check for good solid records - particularly service records. tires may be 'new' looking but many years old if they've been stored. they ain't cheap. check for roof leaks (if rubber roofs). if you want one with a rubber roof and it's clean inside, you can always rhino-line it for permanency. that's common here in texas. the main advantage of a rubber roof is it's a bit better to walk on than a less messy f'glass one. i like the 'glass myself, don't leak, no maintenance issues...
engines will all be big blocks. they're cheap to replace, but might be hard to get to in one or more of the above. the trannys should be very, very good in whatever it is you wind up with. if there's been a lot of service on either, pass... and remember rv miles are MUCH harder on powertrains than cars or trucks, so 70-80k is a LOT of miles to take over and start with IMHO.
low(er) miles, new(er) tires and no roof damage would trump any more desirable 'features' i found in any of the ones you're looking at. also consider one with dash a/c if you can. without dash a/c it'll REQUIRE constant gen-set usage for cooling the thing (that's why we drive a 'b+' motorhome - built on oem type chassis), and they can use a gallon or two per hour running the gens over the road. calculate that mpg! hope this helps, jack b :-) in midland, tx usa
