I am considering the purchase of a used class A. This will be our first as we've had trailers until now. I'm looking at a 98 & 99 with Ford 460 and v-10 respectively. I've read about plug spitting with the V10 and lots of TSB's for 460. I'm looking for advise as to which motor/drivetrain is generally considered more reliable.

Hey, The information I have comes from working in the automotive industry. I currently have an E-350SD with the Triton v10. They seem to be better on fuel while towing then big block V8s. Think of it this way, you have a 460 big block V8. Those cylinders are going to be bigger and heavier and take more energy to move, then 10 cylinders of a smaller mass, Therefor you will need more air and fuel to get them going. Where as with 10 cylinders, they are smaller, take less to move therefor less fuel. Also the more cylinders the more power and less strain on the engine. Yes the do have the tendency to have plugs blow out, but other then that, i have heard very few bad reviews on them. Thats my lore on the subject :) Hope it helps.

This is not a techie answer. I have a class B van motor home on a Ford E350 frame. The unit weighs 9400 lbs when I'm traveling. The V10 will really pull the home in traffic/uphill when it's needed! I've been told the unit has a 3.73 rear end??? My gas mileage (on flat interstate), at (60 miles per hour) consistantly runs at 16 mpg. That's absolute top off to top off. PS. The unit has 112,600 miles on it now and I have never had to do anything to the engine except regular maintenance.

The truck i'm working on is a ford 97 250 4 wheel drive v8 triton thought i was doin a engine swap but it turns out that i'm changing it to a v10 triton now would i have to make alot of changes or would it even be worth doing and what would i all need with that v10

I have a 2003 F250 FX-4 with a V10, I am extremely pleased with the 240,000 miles. A lot of power when needed and it is a daily driver and a weekend warrior. When it was new, the mileage was horrible, now I am getting around 13-14 mpg with my rough driving techniques. I will soon get a new daily driver and I want to make this a project truck. There are limited performance components and I would entertain replacing the engine with a 460 crate for fun. Any ideas?
