Driving the ALCAN highway Jim Mizell 1-23-07
Has anyone on this forum taken a large RV up the ALCAN highway to Alaska? What horror stories do you have or comments. Thanks.

Great trip. Go!

Take the ALCAN highway, don't take shortcuts. The most valuable thing you can get is the Milepost. It goes mile by mile with places of interest and a bit of history.

Most of it is paved, but there may be long stretches of gravel, where they are re-paving or re-routing the road.

We didn't take extra gas tanks/gas cans, but were careful to fill up at each opportunity.

We loved Kluane National Park. We went heli-hiking. We were on top of a mountain with a view to the glacier on the side and the lake on the other. The lake is rimmed with 5 of the 7 tallest mountains in North America. What a view!

Go! You'll love it!

Cary

Jim's question was a good one...is it a better idea to drive a 4x4 pickup with "slide" in camper or an RV of any length?
Re: Driving the ALCAN highway Lou 8-10-09
I'm looking to buy a 27' to 30 ' Travel trailer with a slide out. I have a Ford F250 4X4 crew cab pickup. Is it safe, hard, easy, etc. to drive through Canada and on the ALCAN Highway with a rig like this or is it way too long and cumbersome? I anxiously await some input. Thanks. lou
