Larry, I dollie a 2001 automatic PT Cruiser. I did not want to invest in a trans pump to tow 4 down at this time. We have towed it over 4000 miles so far this summer and had no problems with it at all. Nice car to tow and I don't even know it is back there. A manual trans can be flat towed. If you are looking to buy a cruiser buy one with manual so you can flat tow without having to adding a trans pump. For safety always double check owners manual or contact the manufacter before flat towing....Jim
Jim - Thanks a lot for the info. My wife has this cute little 2005 PT Cruiser convertible. We are on the brink of buying our first RV and are thinking that we want to tow her car along, so we can zip around after we land somewhere. The car has an auto trannie, so guess that we will most likely go with a dolly also. Did you get a dolly with or without brakes?
Which would you suggest? Any better brands or others to avoid ????????
Thanks again, Larry
Larry, Yes you should have brakes on the tow dolly and for that matter if you flat tow you should also have brakes in the tow vehicle. The added weight to the RV's braking system is a problem waiting to happen. You should also have a breakaway system hooked up in case the tow vehicle comes loose and it will stop with out hopefully causeing an accident. I most states a brakeing system is the law. I have a Demco dolly and I really like it. The wheels on the dolly steer and it will track right behind the motorhome with out even knowing it is there. There is also the dollies that have the fixed wheels and the plate turns. I have never used this type so I would not be a good judge on how they perform. We always tow the car with us no matter how far we are going. It has come in really handy to go sight seeing because breaking down camp just to see the sights is a real pain. Also some places do not have parking for a motor home. One time we also needed the car for a run to a hospital. We also have a pair of bikes that we always take with us. All I can say is get the RV and start enjoy the motorhome life. That is all that I ever think about is what time can I get off work to go. All the best!!
We are thinking about a PT Cruiser (5 speed).when I look at the front, I see a lot of cowling (body trim) under the front bumper, I'm getting a RV mount bar. what kind of modification is necessary to the car? thanx. Gary
Lerry. I towed a 2001 PT over 30000 miles 4 wheels down. My PT was a 5 speed. The PT towed great. Never had any trouble with it. Previous to the PT I towed an Olds. on a Dolle. It towed good with not trouble, but I always had the hassle of putting the dollie some where when i go into a campground. Usually had to un hook it and push it out of the way if we were staying long or the park did not have a pull through.
I am about to buy a 2005 PT Convt. but will get a 5 speed again.

I used a Roadmaster Base Plate That is designed for the PT. There is very little modification to the front. The tubes come through the air scoops on each side. They use a round tube.
If you use a Roadmaster or Blue Ox they both make base plates that do not require any cuting of the cowling.
I had my base plate installed at Camping World.
