Towing BMW X5 Gary 4-10-04
BMW X5 is not listed as a towable, and yet the Range Rover Land Rover is towable. I believe that the Land Rover has the same transmission and running gear as the X5. The owners manual for the X5 says that it may be towed four wheels down, but only at a speed not to exceed 45 MPH for a distance not to exceed 95 miles. The BMW service people say that you should not tow the X5. What's up?

I think I would listen to BMW there Gary. If you did tow the BMW and there was some damage what you should ask the dealer.
It may nullify some part of your warranty.
Get a vehicle that CAN be towed...which may be cheaper in the long run (no pun intended. Why ruin a lovely Beamer!

Are you thinking of towing the X5 behind a motorhome?

If so, please don't. You really should trailer it.

The Police may turn a blind eye to the practice of towing small vehicles like Puggy 105s or Fiat Pandas, but your X5 is way too heavy to be let of with a few stern words. You would be risking incurring some heavy fines if stopped towing it other than under a breakdown recovery. If you are thinking of doing Europe.... don't even contemplate going near Austria, Spain, etc or you run the risk of having both car and motorhome impounded.

Forgetting the cost of the vehicle, and/or the make (I'm not a beamer fan so that isn't a consideration) I would never dream of towing any vehicle the size of an X5 as a 'dinghy'. I would definately trailer it for safety of you, your family and other road users (e.g. me and mine!)

Re: towing BMW X5 Ian Broadbent 4-17-04

my previous reply obviously assumes you are in the UK.... (because you have written abot Land & Range Rovers).

If you are in the States then obvioulsy the point about towing and the Law would not generally apply.

Cheers, Ian

Is there a towing kit for attaching a tow bar to a BMW?? If so where is it available?? I am familiar with Roadmaster but they do not seem to have BMW bracket kits. Is there a problem with towing a BMW standard transmission in terms of damage to vehicle?
Re: towing BMW X5 bill 2-1-10
