Pace Arrow eats Plug Wires

Pace Arrow eats Plug Wires Ken Hammett 4-29-01  
My 1990 Pace Arrow 454 eats plug wires after about 300 miles. The problem seems to be in the insulating boot at the plug. One type of wire melted/ cracked the boot and the rubber had stayed gooey for weeks. A replacememt wire seems to heve fired from inside at the top of the plug connector, through the boot, causing a gray/white deposit to form and the boot to crack from the inside. I've been told this is likely from exhaust leaks, but I don't hear any, or see any other signs of such a leak. Will ceramic booted plug wires help? what about running the wires without the metal heat shields?

454 in alegro #1 and #3 plug wires or the #1and #2 plug wires on left side of motor only burned till put heat shield boots on the wires no more truble the left side of my av motor does not havbe much air flow had no right hand side problems

Your on the right track. Add some ceramic boots which should have been installed when new, but some mechanics do away with them as they are difficult to work around. Also it sounds like your having some manifold leaks andd should have them tighten up or replace, since 454's of that vintage always had those problems. Try oversise 21/2" to 3" exhaust pipes as well, GM was undersized for that model year. This restrictioononce eliminated will improve performance and fuel economy plus reduce the heat build up at the engine. Good luck . . .
