Wanted opinion on older Newell Rex Barker 5-30-01
I have been looking at several early 70 vintage Newells. They are tempting because of price. Most have gas engines.Wonder if a diesel would drop in? Would like to talk to anyone out there that owns or has owned one of these beauties.

I bought a 1978 Newell with 6V92 Detroit Diesel. I have been impressed with the quality of the over all box and the systems. For instance, all copper plumbing and real plumbing fixtures. Everything is very fixable. The running gear is heavy duty and seems durable.
Because of the age there is very little depreciation of these older Newells but if you spend a lot of money on one you cannot expect to recoup that,so you can just consider that what you spend is immediately depreciated.
You have to make a lot of miles to justfy the additional expense of diesel over gas and especially a conversion type of situation.
I was sold on an older Newell when I drove the 1978 that I later bought, and compared to the 1997 American Dream that I had just sold, found less rattles, doors that still fit after 200,000 mi., and better ride and handling.

I purchased a 1973 Newell, 38ft. diesel pusher v92. It was originally purchased and owed by Al Unser, the racecar driver. I have driven it all over the country with trouble. Its very quite and quality built. The coach has 130.000 on it. The motor was replace around 3000 miles ago because the person I bought it from never changed the oil. The interior is a little dated but it’s still comfortable. All the pluming is in good shape. The refrigerator and tires was the only thing that I had to replace. Out side of that it’s a great coach. I have thought about selling it and up dating to a new one.

I said in my first message the I had trouble. The only trouble I had was with the old engine. since it had been replace its been trouble free.
