My husband and I have just recently become interested in RVing. I've started reading magazines and looking at Websites and have some very basic questions:
1. What are the pros and cons of deisel vs. gas engines? Why would one buy one over the other?
2. What are your opinions about which brand we should consider? Want something large with shower/tub combo, queen bed, lots of amenities, but not too complicated for 1st timers.
3. What is your opinion about new vs. used?
4. I'm in early 30s, husband in early 40s. We're both friendly and can get along with lots of different types. But given our young age, would we fit in with the crowd at RV parks and rallies?
(1) Buy what you can afford....we have a 34' 10 year old Pace Arrow and it works great for my family and I...
(2) Look at lots of motorhome for sale...look at new and used...this will give you a fair way to evaluate what motorhomes are worth..,.it does help to have a dollar figure in mind...believe me you will find many used RVs that have NOT been maintained....I think that you can pretty much tell what shape the power trin is in by what the outside and inside of the coach looks like...if the inside has been maintained, I beleiev the motor and drive has been maintained too...make a wish list...and then compare your budget and wishes against the units you look at...pretty soon you will know what you are looking at and a reletive value...
(3) Don't worry about that...I am early 50s, my wife is mid 40s, and my daughter is 12, we have travelled all over Canada and the US, stayed in many parks and in all of our travels, have met many great people, some we even stay in contact with still. Go RVing for yourselves, and believe me you will never regret it, we wished we had bought our unit long before we did....
I hope this helps, if you need any other help just contact me...
thanks

Hello there. We have a 34 foot gas. for us it is sufficient. I have slide out envy however, and if you are buying, would not consider one without a slideout. they make a world of difference. gas vs. diesel is like ford vs. chevy. for everyone that likes gas, one likes a diesel.
about your age, when we got our first motorhome in 93 we took one of those "tours" for free camping and listened to a sales pitch for the resort. I was in my early 40's at the time. We were the youngest people there. I didn't like that. We later toured another resort group, and they are very family oriented and you will find all sorts like that out there. from people that tent camp to people in large expensive coaches. all sharing a love of life that is strange to homebound people. If you love going out in your "whatever you decide", you will fit in as there are many young persons out there. Our first resort experience was not the norm.
Hi my wife and i are young also and have been fulltiming this year. she is 28 im 35 and we get along great with everyone we run into the only difference in diesel or gas is deisel motors last forever and gas milage.

Your questions are all good ones. I suggest starting small and used to see if youreally like it. I'not much older than your husband and I think about it day and night.. Gas will give you good value for th emoney especially if you're still working and the motorhome sits more than it's used. Diesel will give you all that you'll ever need with a much higher proce tag, almost 30K more for like equipment. ALso you can always trade up much easier than trading down. Your choice of a motorhome should be somewhat based upon where you can get good service. They always have something needing repairs. Fleetwood is the largest and can offer many more service dealers nationwide. Bounder is the #1 selling model in the RV industry for motorhomes.

Reading some replies, I would like to expand on motors. A big factor is mileage. Diesel is more miles per gallon. Diesel would be chosen if the RV is going many miles. This is where it pays off. Diesel engines are larger, and I guess that counts for the expense. Diesels are simpler and more reliable. Cost of fuel is the buying decision here.
Age - do your own thing. I've camped for only 5-6 years now, and I'm not in to being friends with everyone. My neighbors are nice and friendly, but I'm not looking to have coffee with them.
I started with a popup and got many years out of it. Just upgraded to a Bayridge by Damon Co. Previous replies are right - YOU WANT A PULLOUT. You'll find many people selling because they want this feature.
They all have the same amenities, so get all the options you listed. I was a first timer until last weekend when I moved into my new 38'. Believe me, they are simple. Salespeople won't help. Light the pilot light for hot water and turn on the elec, that's really it. Travel trailers will work on your car's battery while you dive, and then will switch to 110V AC at the campground. Therefore, the appliances (fridge)will be DC/AC switchable. This is to live entirely off a battery. Don't fret, I'm sure you'll be hooked up to power. Get AC too!

Hi ...my husband is 48 and I am 39. We own a 82 Winnebago Class A. It is great for us. My friends just bought a new 30 ft Itasca Class C and it has a slideout which I wish we had. It makes a big difference in the living space. They are in the same age range as us. You will find many different age groups of RV'ers and most of them are really interesting and friendly. I wouldn't worry about your age.
Have you thought of maybe renting an RV for a weekend just to try one out..it might give you some ideas on what you might like or dislike.

You did ask some very valid questions for someone starting
the RV lifestyle. Although diesel coaches do have many advantages over gasoline, the much higher initial cost, higher routine maintenance cost and much more complicated systems make them less desirable, in my opinion, than a good gasoline engine coach. I am now on my fifth coach and have owned both gas and diesel and have found it to be less expensive and troublesome with the gas coaches.
As far as your ages and how you would fit into the RV lifestyle, you need not worry about that because you will find all types of people with all types of interests. Some of the best friends that I have made over the years were through the various RV travel clubs that I am a member. You will find that there are numerous clubs and it will probably enhance your enjoyment by traveling with groups part of the time.
As for the specifications that you outlined that you wanted in your RV, I am selling my coach and would en-courage you to consider my coach since it seems to be exactly what you specified. In any case, good luck with your search and happy RVing. You may view my ad at
