Pace Arrow/460 overheat problem Gerald Kibildis 6-27-01
1991 Oshgosh/Ford/460/C6 trans overheats in Fla. heat. Radiator removed, routed out, cleaned, new fan clutch, new water pump, new thermo at 180, new cooler spark plugs, reset ign timing. I give up! Cruises okay at 50 mph/3200 RPM/190 eg. Put the pedal down, 60mph/3800 RPM, temp now 220, and ign detonation begins, slow down and temp soon drops to 190. Removed catylitic converter, installed dual pipes, no change. Suspect C6 trans gearing (3 speed) causes engine RPM to runn too high. 70 MPH is limit with engine screaming. Any comments from overdrive owners?

Gerald I agree with you, the problem is the engine is revving too hard for those speeds...I might suggest the installation of an overdrive unit...here are some facts..I have a 1990 Pace Arrow/454 when we bought the unit , to do 60 miles an hour the engine turned 2900rpm seemed very high to me especially when on a long haul...I had a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit installed by a local shop, what a difference...Now in high gear the engine turns 2400 rpm, lot quieter and cooler...in hilly terrain we go back to low speed for power but on most highway stretches we are in high gear, we tow a small van and have had no problems...if you want any more info, email me

I HAVE A 1991 PACE ARROW 30' IT HAS A 454 CHEVY AND A 4L80-E 4 SPD AUTO TRANS. IT CRUISES AT 60MPH 1950 RPMS. IT RUNS COOL UNTIL I GO UP A STEEP HILL, THE TEMP. GAUGE DOES RISE, BUT DOES NOT OVERHEAT.
