|Re: 454 engines in general by bill jacobs|
|I'm on my second 454. The 1st in a 94 pickup and this one is the Vortec in a 97. Both were 4X4 heavy 3/4 tons. I switched the 1st one for the Vortec 350 with 4.10 gears and quickly went back to the 454 with 3.73 gears.
I pull a 31' travel trailer and the 454 with the 3.73 gets better mileage than the 350 did and doesn't work as hard. The 454's are a lot warmer under the hood, with a MH I would make sure theres a heat sheild for the starter. That and the manifolds are the only problems I've heard of. The lifters clatter a little on mine but it just turned 100K this month.
Use a big block and you won't be able to stand the hi revs on a small block. When driving back and forth to work the 350 got 13mpg and the 454 got 14mpg. It was a 30 mile trip each way on state hwy with 3 four way stops and 6 stop lights.
In all honesty the 350 did OK but the 454 does it easier.
