1988 F 350 Elite motor home won't keep running Bruce 2-29-08
I just bought a motor home and never even made it home. it acts like it is out of gas and then won't start. It turns over but won't start. 1988 F 350 with a 5.8 (351) fuel injected. Had it towed to the mechanic. After it got there I tried one more time and it started. They (the mechanic) replaced the coil and coil pick up, and the fuel filter. It was running good, went to drive it home and it did the same thing all over again. I am running out of money (tow trucks are expensive) and will try and fix it my self. Any ideas what is going on. I am sure it is not getting fuel. it turns over and will fire, but will not start or run very long if it does. the reason I believe it is a fuel problem is that there is no smell of fuel at the tail pipe when it won't start. If I pump the throttle, it will fire and not start. The fuel pump does run when the key is turned on.

Does this truck have two fuel pumps? Is there an alternative to the $45.00 filter from the factory?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce

I had the same problem. Shortly after I got my 88 E-350 MH home it would not start. Internet research pointed to the Idel Control Valve. That was the problem. I replaced it and the problem has not returned. A short time later, it came up with your same problem, it would run for a short time and quit. The web site pointed at the EGR being stuck open. It was and I replaced it. Neither problem has returned, it runs great. Here is the website : http://fordfuelinjection.com It has been very good at explaining alot about the early model fuel injected Fords. Good Luck Bruce, your almost there!

Tip on egr valve being stuck open. My 96 Buick 3.8 was idleing very rough. Sounded like a racing cam, real throaty sound at air filter. Called my mechanic friend to stop by. He ask for a heavy hammer. Bumped the base of the egr while engine was running 2 times. Idle smoothed out perfect and problem has not returned. 15,000 miles since problem. Wife really babies it. I now blow it out every 2 months.

Did you solve your problem with the F350 Elite MH ? sitting long ? perhaps
water in fuel ? add some fuel booster.

For me it was the starter solenoid, partially broken, apparently only made intermittant contact. Found out after replacing starter that the dealership said was bad
