How do I set timing on a 440 dodge	rhio	2-25-08
I have a 1977 Motorhome with a 440. For the life of me I am not able to locate any timing marks. The torque converter has no inspection hole. I do see some marks on the enging damper but there is no reference plate to time it to. It seems to run fine with no knocking but I would like to know another or any way to time the engine.. thanks...rhio..

It sounds like you need to make your own marks first you need to find a spot you will be able to see with a timing light and mark it on the block or water pump etc then To find top dead center take a wooden meat skewer. (Jiant tooth pick), Pull the plug on # 1 and roll the engine by hand untill you feel the piston come up and hit the skewer you shoved in the spark plug hole. I have used thin screwdrivers for this but if it gets wedged between a valve and the piston you will do damage, There is less chance with a skewer. NOw you need to feel when the piston reaches TDC. The best way to do this is to use a dial indicator with a long reach, (the skewer will thread into the bar on mine if I remove the ball tip) Some guys take a spark plug and weld a bolt to the end so when the engine is rotated up the piston contacts the bolt. They mark this position and rotate the oposit way and mark that position. TDC is half way between. The Dial Indictor will tell you when the piston stops moving. That will tell you + or - 1 degree where TDC is with the head on. More accurate with the head off of course. In my opinion the dial indicater is safer. Once you find TDC mark it in line with your mark on the engine. Good Luck

Get the #1 cyl; at t.d.c. mark the pulley and crankcase in line underneath.For every 2inchs diammeter of pulley measure,017 for every degree of timing. E.G.- for 8 degrees before T.D.C. measure 8x.o17 if the pulley measures 6inches diameter. It will be 3x.o17 x 8 =.408 on surface of pulley.
