Re: 78 dodge 440 timing adjustment air/fuel by BUBBA THE BUS TECH
Post New Message Unless this is a trick question about a 440 variant that I dont know about the timing is adjusted by loosening the distributor hold down bolt in some units using a mirror, but basicly useing a timing light to see the timing marks on the harmonic damper. Unpluging the vacume advance if equiped and turning the distributor untill the desired value is reached. Tighten the distributor down and recheck, re-conect the vacume line. Timing has very little to do with mixture. Check that the engine is to full operating tempeature and take the air cleaner lid off. Is the choke all the way open? Shut it off. Do you see fuel leaking into the barrels of the carb. Was this measurement done at idle or under load? Under load check the choke, then either rebuild the carb or get a rebuilt. It probably has plugged passages from dried fuel. If you have time and can drive it a bit you can try dumping fuel system cleaner in it and see if it will self correct. But I doubt it. Some olde Dodges plug the crossover passage, this can and will cause a rich condition. I am not sure about your vintage but we used to take the choke stove off and run welding rod through the passage to free it up. Good Luck but without more complete info Sorry.
