I have a chevy 350 carb with no oil pressure. WTF!!! I ripped the motor out and looked at the oil pump (good) the oil pick up tube can move up and down freely. Is that good? I thought there was supposed to be a weld there? Whats the clearance supposed to be from the pick-up to pan? The oil pan is stock. The 3 bolts from the oil gallies are their. It has hydrulic valves and they bleed down when turned?????? Any help?
Yes i found that the clearance should be from 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch but as far as the pump and pan, i was told the set up is good. The engine was not making any knocking. No strange noises. I did check oil pressure before I removed the engine. It stood at O. The reason I am trying to trouble shoot this is it was running rough. Really rough. It wouldnt stay running. The plugs were fowled so we replaced those. It has msd ignition and is getting all proper everything. The thing that got me was it has hydraulc lifters and needs oil pressure to run them right. When you turn it with the valve covers off you can see the rockers bleed down when maybe there on the open cycle of the exhaust and/or intake phase. After that I checked the oil pressure and found that there wasnt any. Its supposed to be a fresh rebuild so I checked the bolts behind the timing chain cover. They are present. I checked the oil pump and when i turn it sounds to be sucking pretty good.????? Any ideas
The oil pump pickup should be firm and NOT move.there were several 350's through the years-and some had different pans.
as for setting clearance--i don't have a clue--night find a junk engine look at it.-or overhaul shop--ask them.off bottom 1/2" possibly-

OK the problem was the high pressure fuel pump in the tank. Car used to be fuel injection. Spit too much fuel pressure. Gas washed the engine...caused major damage
Well Im going to send the engine off to a rebuilder tomorrow. Heres my theory, the engine is a 350 bored.60 over. When it was rebuilt maybe it was rebuilt with just 350 rings? Do you have to have different rings when you bore it? I would figure you would. But anyway I think that the gasoline just passes through the pistons and goes straight to the oil pan.
WAS the engine running ok after the rebuild or did this just start acting up.Agree with Rich you need a tight fit on the pick up tube.Wonder if its leaking air into the oil and maybe foaming not allowing it to get much pressure. May have a restriction some where from debris left in from the rebuild. If it was me,I would get a new pick up and a new pump and try it. You Might just pull the Distributor and look at the pump drive, don't think you will find anything but worth a look see. Good Luck MIKE
Does the engine look like its been repainted with paint all over everything,or is new paint just on the engine parts. When you had the engine out was the back side fresh paint? You smell gas is the carb. flooding,?If the pickup tube is not tight it will leak air and not pick up oil. Gas can get around bad rings. another source of gas can be a bad fuel pump leaking gas into the block. I think you may have other problems causing it to run rough and only for two minutes. A hole in a fuel line will sometimes do the same thing, draw air in the hose and not pump any gas. Not much help but I do think you need a good tight fit on the tube.Maybe the rebuilder used the wrong tube and did not want to mess with fixing it. Good Luck MIKE
You might also try driving the pump with a electric drill' using a old dist.with the gear teeth ground off.Watch the pressure at higher speeds and then check the oil for any foaming. How long are you getting the engine to run.? Is it getting up to enough rpm to realy build much pressure.? Don't know about the weld but go get the proper pick up and see if its welded. From my 1993 Chevy Motor Home Manual. Chevy 5.7.Inspect oil pickup tube for looseness. If the tube is loose in the oil pump body, replace it, A loose pickup tube can result in an air leak and loss of oil pressure. MIKE
The engine was running rough from the get go. Thats why I was trying to figure why it was doing that. There is no foaming of the oil. The oil does smell like its mixed with gasoline. The engine runs for like 2 minute, then i try to move it and it dies. The loose oil pick-up tube probally can result in a loss of oil pressure but not none. Im just thinking on that motion. What happens if u do not have an old dist.? Getting a new pump takes a lot of work. Then I have to reinstall the engine and my heart says that if lower oil pressure, YES but not this case. What bout worn piston rings? But all and all I cant tell you for sure that the engine was rebuilt. Just thats what the guy told me when i bought the car.
I have a 92 chevy 350 that has been played with the first time i drove it it had oil pressure after 7 miles it slowly started drooping i put thicker oil in it i can start it and it will have oil pressure and then after a minute or 2 it will start droping
I HAVE 396 CHEVY ALL NEW TOP TO BOTTON MY VALVES NORZE YOU CAN ADJUST THEN PUT THE COVERS BACK NO LUCK GET HYDREILC LIFTERS COMP CAM COMP ROCKER ARMS MILLER 1.7O 7/16 STUDS I PUT A MSD HEI WITH 2 ORING IN NO HELP WHY WOULD I NOT GET OIL TO THE ROCKER JUST A LITTLE NOT A LOT CAN YOU HELP SENTS REBUILD ABOUT 300 MILES IT WINT BACK TO THE BUILDER 1 TIME HE SAID HE WOULD SENT ME A SET OF ROCKER I DO NOT THANK THIS WOULD THE PROBLEM I SAY N OIL UP TO THE VALVES.
