My 1992 454 was back firing at the shift points 35 and 58 MPH when held to the floor. It turned out to be the pick up coil in the distributor but when under it looking before I realized it was actually back firing I found the exhaust manifolds were both leaking and they have been fixed. The new pick up coil was a $13 part but had to pull and separate the distributor to replace it. I would just go with a rebuilt distributor if I was doing it again or paying someone else to do it. The $13 pick up coil fixed it and since we have done the plugs, wiring set, cap and button as we plan to do a 5K mile trip next year. Currently re coring the radiator because it was getting weak and we had it off doing the alternator, water pump, fan clutch and all belts and hoses. |
