Chevy 350 belts Michael 10-24-07
I have a 1987 chevy 350 in my Rockwood, and it keeps breaking the water pump belt. about every 300 miles.
the belt is on the water pump, the air pump, and the alternator. any ideas why?
I have changed out the air pump but still throw belts...
I have a co-worker with the same problem, says he travels with several belts.

Thanks for any ideas!
Mike

Repeated belt failures screems that something is badly wrong. I have seen alternators sieze, blow the belt, release and seem to be ok when you get pulled over to change the belts. If it is this way it will generaly have a loose front or rear bearing or make noise when spun. Have seen a seized solid fan clutch do this blow the belt routine. On a lot of these fan clutch equeped units the fan never locks up. The only time that stress gets put on is if the fan clutch fails. Water pump bearing failures see the alternator above. By the way what brand belts are you using? I have seen people try to use low stress industrial belts in automotive aplications and have failures like this. Good Luck

I have found that repeated belt failures or throwing belts is caused by something not quite in line.

When did the problem first start? Was it after one of the driven units was changed out? If that is the case, perhaps something wasn't put in square with everything else.

I have also seen belt pulleys wear out to the point at which the belt rides too low or too high. Improper belt ride height can cause belts to wear out prematurely because the part of the belt that is designed to carry the load isn't making the correct contact with the pulleys.

It isn't normal to throw or replace belts very often. When it does, there is a reason.

Good luck and let us know what you find.
