Detroit 6V92t w electronic fuel-not starting todd- 10-22-07
I have recently purchased a bus with the famous 6V92 turbo with electronic fuel management, I can not get it to power back up (Start) I am not well studied here but have checked what I have been told.

Including sheer pin in blower and rotation of the fuel pump. I took the fuel pump off and can see that it draws only small amount of fuel( 1-2 gallons or less per minute, does anyone have any thoughts? I was told this pump should produce 20 plus gallons per minute, whats the real specs and can anyone help. please add info you feel would help-no matter the subject related to this engine

Garden sprayers work well as prime cans. Instead of spray wand on the end install a fitting that will fit onto the fitting on the top of the filter.

I have had to re-prime a bus that has lost prime several times before it finally "took". One bus that had a fuel line pick-up problem took more than 15 gallons pumped through the prime can before it finally would run unassisted. And that was with a full tank of fuel.

It isn't rocket science but it can be very frustrating when an engine doesn't want to restart.

OK. The fuel pump is rated with no air in the system running at 1800 rpm pump speed (not detroit spec, my rule of thumb) The way to easily check the pump is on a running engine and check the pressure at 1800 to 2000. I think it's suposed to be 70 psi. Does the engine run on starting fluid, or if you are cautious try to start? If it does the air intake system is ok to start it. The unit should run on your primer system. If it won't You are looking for computor/injection problems. The easiest way to prime the fuel system is to find the schrader valve (tire valve) on the primary or secondary fuel filter base. Pump fuel into this valve At less than 70 psi but more than 30. Diesel shops have a pump special set up for this. If you are as cheap as me undo the fuel feed line to the primary filter and hook a hand pump to the inlet line and pump from a jerry can until fuel fills the system. I usualy take a plug out of the secondary filter base and pump until the fuel starts coming out then put the plug in and continue pumping for the same amount of time or until the jerry can is empty. Then reconect the fuel line. Remember we have air between the tank and the filter still so when the engine starts it will need to go instantly to high rpm (1500 +) for at least 3 minutes to purge the air from the system. This system will only self prime at high rpm. Like 1500. This a pain if it won't start so we have to prime it. Though I was broke down one time and had my bus towed to a steep long hill that happend to be a block away from where I ran out and got it running that way. I hope this will help, Good Luck

Thanks for the info- I can get it to fire for as long as the starting fluid last in the system and then it dies, so we know it works, what baffled me is that it was just under power a few minutes earlier.I shut it down myself so the broke thing doesn't enter my mind ( the unit was just purchased and we found that the filters had a 2004 date on them- that is being changed). I have found a diagram that will allow me to install and use an electric fuel pump as needed and by pass when not in use, or really use the system to get the unit primed or run for the first few minutes till it clears.
Even after checking all lines for flow we still are not getting it out or past the injector supply or the return, probably needs primed and that's where the pump will come in handy.
Pleas keep looking and maybe I can post good results.

I am baffled, the pump did not seem to work. we blead the lines and the fuel management sysyem seems to be off line, any ideas on getting it to go -short of a tow to the shop.

How much fuel per minute on the return line we herd 1 gallon per minute at idle and what is the psi compression per cylinder

The one thing we havent covered is.... is the the computor waking up? Turn the run switch/key on the red and amber dash lights should come on. If they don't either the brain has no power or its toast. If the voltage drops to low durring cranking it will go brain dead and not start but it will still crank and sound fine but not deliver fuel. Very anoying. Try boosting it. Last try getting someone to hook up a computor box to while trying to start. That while the most expensive thing will tell the tail. Good Luck

Having the exact problem with a 1996 detroit engine, will run on the starter fluid, primed the fuel all the way up and have a weak return, but the injectors won't seem to pick it up, you never see the smoke start up like it should when the diesel hits the engine.

Any other tips or trick to get this sucker to prime and fire on diesel?

Well... add another one to the list. I have a 6V92T in a 1988 Silver Eagle Bus and can't get it started. It will try to start on starting fluid but dies as soon as it burns off. I also have No smoke when it is cranking. It sounds just like what you guys are dealing with as well. Let me know if you come up with anything. After having problems, I changed the filters and primed the system (I think) but still having same issue. Sounds like the 6V gremlin has been working overtime on all of our motors.

Let me know if you guys come up with anything and I'll do the same.
