Guys I need some help Please.Just purchased a 92 Ford 23 ft. M.H. 460,auto w/od.50 k on the clock,I did a rad. service, new t/stat 195.I checked w laser ir gun and was running cold at 170.Changed to a special order 205,checked again, better but only 180.we ran it w the 205 but it never got over 185.My thinking is if the motor will not run at least 195 How can the ecu lean out the engine? Any sugestion or comments are greatfully appreciated thanks Bruce

The infrared thermomiter would need to see the actual coolant to get an actual measurment. The material the coolant runs through will insulate, and through the air flow from the fan cool and thus present a cooler temp than the coolant itself. Your engine computor will assume the engine is at operating temp from about 150 F and above. My big block chev runs with a 160 stat and the computor is corectly metering fuel and timing. The closest I ever got to actual temp on the race car was measuring between the exshaust runners on the head. I assume that that is artificaly high because of the port being right there. If you realy want to know the coolant temp, install an aux guage of good quality into the head or water out-let. The laser gun is good for T shooting but you need to find a good version of what you are looking at and find what error level you will have from these factors first. I bet your engine coolant is 200 and above, and this is probably not good in a high stress application. Good Luck
