I just bought it and am trying to get it running! It's been sitting in by neighbors garage for maybe 3 - 5 years. It wiss start and run for maybe 10-15 seconds then crap out. I cranked her again and smelled gas; flooded, I assumed. I took the cover off and watched the carb while cranking it again. I noticed gas coming up through a tube on the top of the carb. I am again assuming that this is what is causing the flooding! I have limited knowledge on carb operation, but i don't think that the gas should be coming out of this tube! Any suggestions on what may be causing this and how to remedy the situation will be greatly appreciated!!! My wife is starting to nag me... she's ready to hit the road!!! Help!!!
The float is stuck. This can be caused by the needle and seat being crudded up from the evaporation of the fuel in the carb or other debris. The only cure I know that works every time is to get a carb kit and some carb cleaner, tear it down clean it very thouroly. reassemble and adjust to the specs provided with the kit. Cautions: There are little rods, springs and check balls in this carb. They all need to go back where they came from. I do tear downs on a cookie sheet so I don't loose anything. The instructions that come with the kits include guages to adjust float open level and full of fuel level, choke kick etc etc. With an afternoon and carefull work it will run like a champ, as long as this is the only problem. If there is not a kit available you will need to tear it down and clean it then reassemble using all the old parts. Dificult to get these apart without damageing the gaskets sometimes. The less technical solution is to get a rebuilt from your local parts store. Last one I needed wasn't available anymore. Good Luck.
Thanks Bubba! I guessed that a carb cleaning and possibly a rebuild was the final verdict. I was really curious as to what was making the gas come up through that tube. Is it that the float valve is stuck down and not shutting off the flow of gasoline into the carb? Thus making the gasoline come up through the tube in the top of the carb? Thanks again!
Exactly right. Think of the float inside your toilet tank. This principle is exactly the same and you can WATCH it in operation. Standard float is a ball on the end of the shut off arm. Water rises, float rises, arm moves into shutoff position, toilet shuts off, right? If the float were to become STUCK, it would SUBMERGE in teh rising water, and the water would begin to overflow the top of the toilet tank.....or since it is a closed chamber in the carb it would start to overflow THROUGH THE VENT TUBE. Unless you know what you are doing I wouldn't attempt to rebuild the carb myself. Save yourself a hassle (and argument with the wife). Find a carb specialist and let him/her rebuild it. Those guys are still out there in this fuel injected world of today, you sometimes have to hunt is all. I went from gas station to gas station, old rolodex to greasy old business card, before finding a guy who did a fantastic job rebuilding it and charged me $150. Good luck.
My foot gas pedal area gets really hot while driving. Also it seems to have a hard time starting after shutting it off to refuel or stop for a few minutes. Any sugestions?
