I have a 1990 southwind with a 454 chev motor. It runs great and has plenty of power. Lately it has started cutting out and then restarting. The choke light comes on and sometimes it will backfire. I have changed the distrubutor cap, plug wires, coil and the brain chip in the cap. The carburator was rebuild and the fuel pumps are working correctly. It is an intermittent problem that is driving me nuts. I can drive it 200 miles with no problem and then it starts cutting out and sometimes backfires. Is there another computer in the motor bay that I'm missing? Any ideas will be appreciated.
Rich,Thanks for the tips. Icrawled under it and the only filter I found was the one for the genarator. The main line comes off the top of the tank(100 gal) as rubber and goes to a regulator?? from there it becomes round tube on the inside of the passenger frame rail. It goes thur the frame rail just before the excaust and stays as tube till it get to the side door. It then goes to rubber for about 24" and then back to metal tube to the fuel pump. I did chance the filter in the carb,It did seem OK but why risk it. The total run of fuel line is about 30' I will change the rubber line if this does not help. As far as the vent by the tank, can I use compressed air to back flush the vent? Thanks for the help, Howard
Have you changed the Fuel filter-It's along the right hand side frame rail."Fram-G4727" AC GF 481 or GF 626,
there is also a check valve just forward of the tank.
check all your fuel lines---you might have a rotted rubber fuel iinne and sucking air-
also check the vent line-mud daubers get in it stop it up
and tank cant vent
fuel cant be sucked against the "vacuume " it causes-and the enging quits-
air gets in when engine quits-
then it will go again

don't compress the tank with air---
"that's dangerous" when mine got stopped up i used a old coat hanger.
my fuel filter is right near the step along the rail-possibly someone took it out of yours and added the rubber hose--the 24" you mentioned.just for the heck of it---change the filter for the Generator while you at it--and it will be hard to start--till gas gets back to the generator again.

Rich, I replaced that filter about 30 hours ago. I will clean out that vent today, and try it out this coming weekend. That brings up a new problem. The genarator is a Onan Emerald 3- 6.5 kw 2cylinder gas motor. I just replaced the starter motor on it and did a complete tune up, points plugs condencer. It fires right up then stops as soon as i let go of the start switch. If I hold the starter button in( not a good idea) it stays running.Any thoughts on this one? Thanks for the replys, Howard H
My camper has had everything replaced but the coil, generator and distributor and condeser. It cuts out on low revs such as at traffic lihts, I have had it tiuned and the fuel situation seams ok, the gernator light comes on after it has cut out. Has any body had this problem and solved it?
My 1992 454 was back firing at the shift points 35 and 58 MPH when held to the floor. It turned out to be the pick up coil in the distributor but when under it looking before I realized it was actually back firing I found the exhaust manifolds were both leaking and they have been fixed. The new pick up coil was a $13 part but had to pull and separate the distributor to replace it. I would just go with a rebuilt distributor if I was doing it again or paying someone else to do it. The $13 pick up coil fixed it and since we have done the plugs, wiring set, cap and button as we plan to do a 5K mile trip next year. Currently re coring the radiator because it was getting weak and we had it off doing the alternator, water pump, fan clutch and all belts and hoses.
WE'RE HAVING A SIMILAR ENGINE PROBLEM AND HAVE NOT SOLVED IT YET.AS FOR YOU GENERATOR,DEPENDING ON WHAT YOUR VOLTAGE AND HERTZ ARE WHEN YOU HOLD THE SWITCH DOWN AND KEEP IT RUNNING.
IT MAY BE A VOLTAGE REGULATOR,CONTROL BOARD.BOTH OF WHICH ARE EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR.I WOULD RECOMEND TAKING IT TO A REPAIR CENTER THAT CAN DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM.VISIT MY SITE WWW.BRIGHTSIDERVCENTER.COM I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.GOOD LUCK.
I had the same problem, I replaced the wire coming from the negative side of the coil to the points and it cured the problem. The wire was arking to ground
robbing fire from the condensor, hope it works for you.............. jack
