1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine Debra Swensen 6-3-07
My husband just bought a 1978 Dodge Rv, we went to bring it home and he stated that the high revving will not stop. When he took off from a light it took off he almost lost control, when we start it we have to shut it down because it takes off.

Any hints would help.

We are having some sort of charging system problem that has stumped us and our mechanic. Our charging system will not keep our batteries charged. It appears that the charging system is dead. We've replaced both batteries, the alternator & voltage regulator (twice), and replaced associated wires. Still the system is not charging. Any ideas?

Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine John 6-4-07
Sounds like a stuck throttle? Im not sure.

I have a question. How long is yours? I am looking at a 1979 Dodge Beaver, 28 ft. It seems to take a long time to get to peed, around 45 or 50 MPH. I know its a lot of weight to get moving but does it take a long time to get to speed? Engine sounds strong and seems like it sounds good and strong.
Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine BILL,III 7-3-07
DEBRA..I HAVE THE SAME ENGINE. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME ON THE WAY TO VACATION.
I WAS LUCKY AND FOUND A SHADE TREE THAT KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING.

ALL IT WAS IS THE HOSE FROM THE THE FRONT OF THE CARBORATOR(LARGER HOSE)
THAT RUNS FROM THE BOTTOM FRONT(VACCUMN?)OF THE CARB. HOSE OUT OF THE CARB. GOES TO THE LEFT VALVE COVER AND THE OTHER GOES DOWN SOMEWHERE BEHIND THE ENGINE.
THE HOSE HAD BECOME SEPARATED. ALL HE DID WAS PUT BACK TOGETHER AND PUT A CLAMP ON IT AND WE WERE ON OUR WAY. TOTAL CONTRO; AGAIN. I KNOW HOW YOU 2 FELT.
HE WOULD NOT EVEN CHARGE ME FOR IT.
IT WAS TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL AND LIKE YOU SAID DANGEROUS. NO WAY COULD I HAVE CONTINUED ON THE 1ST DAY OF OUR VAC.
I WAS NEAR CAMPING WORLD AND THEY WOULD NOT EVEN LOOK AT IT. WE WERE STRANDED.
HE SAID IT WOULD BE A COUPLE OF DAYS AND WE HAD TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.
NEEDLESS TO SAY CAMPING WORLD IS NOT LONGER ON MY PLACES TO VISIT.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

BILL,III

Remove inside engine cover and then remove airfilter assembly to gain access to carborator. On driver side of carb; there is a small 1nch thing on the linkage that looks like a counterwieght. spray this linkage with wd40 and work it back and forth until it releases freely when you use the excellarator. good luck from Seattle

I bought a 77 Chieftan and it ran very well on the freeway at 55 until I started going up a hill and It wouldn't accelerate past 25 mph the carb started popping then the motor turned off. I noticed I was getting gas from the gas line to the carb when I tried turn on the motor again with the hose off.I figure it could be my fuel filter or pump. Can I get a schematic on a Chrysler 440.Having a hard time finding it.

If your engine is a end type and this filter is in the middle or near the rear; its for the genset. hope this is of some help. from Seattle
Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine dylan coulson 8-10-10
I had the same problem and i ran a new line from the altenator to the start batt. not the coach batt. and it worked fine after that. for some reason the last mechanic put the altenator charging the wrong battery and it wasnt charging properly and we had a problem with the selinoids at that switch the batt power back and fourth beetween the coach and starter batt.

Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine xzedd 10-12-10
If you replaced the cables too then sounds like your battery isolator. go find it (if you dont know its a big heat-sink lookin thing with 3 big terminals on it. its just 2 giant diodes pointed away from each other.) jump the terminals from center (alternator) to one of the other ones (engine system and cabin system). you should see a small spark on either one if they both have good batteries. if you have no isolator and have just a solenoid then your engine/vehicle system should be charging. if it isn't then you've got an ignition problem. (check fuses and fuse-able links)

Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine jim 3-26-14
These motor homes have a breaker box much like a regular home, often hidden under the bed. find this, open the cover and check to see if they have been tripped. reset as needed. good luck. from Seattle
Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine John 7-12-14
The plugs, microwave, and ac all run on 110 volt power - not 12 volt from the battery. You have to plug into an external source for this power, or run the generator.

Vapor lock-clip colthes line clips on the fuel line when get up to the motor-fuel pump-carb. Mine already had on when I brothgt it. Put then side by side as many as you can. Phyics,I guess.

Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine jim 3-26-14
This is not a vapor lock problem; it is however, a balist resister problem. the balist resister is made of ceramic material and contains two very small wires that occasionally break inside the block of ceramic. The break is so small, that when the engine is cool, it make static contact.but when the engine gets hot the ceramic material expands and breaks this connection, which kills the engine. replace this part. good luck. from seatte

Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine jim 3-26-14
You may need to replace your start/auxilary splitter module. it usually sits up by the top of the radiator. your altinator uses this to split the charge between your start battery and your auxilary system. if not this check and replace your main selinoid
Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine jim 3-26-14
The oil dipstick comes into the engine from up front by radiator, between batery set and radiator it should be sticking out there and is vary long. you have to check the level there however; to put oil in, you have two choices; funnel it through same hole or remove inside engine cover and remove valve cover cap and funnel it in that way. hope this is of some help.
