1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine Debra Swensen 6-3-07
My husband just bought a 1978 Dodge Rv, we went to bring it home and he stated that the high revving will not stop. When he took off from a light it took off he almost lost control, when we start it we have to shut it down because it takes off.

Any hints would help.

We are having some sort of charging system problem that has stumped us and our mechanic. Our charging system will not keep our batteries charged. It appears that the charging system is dead. We've replaced both batteries, the alternator & voltage regulator (twice), and replaced associated wires. Still the system is not charging. Any ideas?

I have a 78 Southwind with a 440. It ran fine last year but I just put the batteries back in and when I tried to start it the positive side got so hot it melted the post on the battery. WTF? I checked all the wiring to ensure I there are no shorts. Any ideas?

Sounds like a stuck throttle? Im not sure.

I have a question. How long is yours? I am looking at a 1979 Dodge Beaver, 28 ft. It seems to take a long time to get to peed, around 45 or 50 MPH. I know its a lot of weight to get moving but does it take a long time to get to speed? Engine sounds strong and seems like it sounds good and strong.

DEBRA..I HAVE THE SAME ENGINE. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME ON THE WAY TO VACATION.
I WAS LUCKY AND FOUND A SHADE TREE THAT KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING.

ALL IT WAS IS THE HOSE FROM THE THE FRONT OF THE CARBORATOR(LARGER HOSE)
THAT RUNS FROM THE BOTTOM FRONT(VACCUMN?)OF THE CARB. HOSE OUT OF THE CARB. GOES TO THE LEFT VALVE COVER AND THE OTHER GOES DOWN SOMEWHERE BEHIND THE ENGINE.
THE HOSE HAD BECOME SEPARATED. ALL HE DID WAS PUT BACK TOGETHER AND PUT A CLAMP ON IT AND WE WERE ON OUR WAY. TOTAL CONTRO; AGAIN. I KNOW HOW YOU 2 FELT.
HE WOULD NOT EVEN CHARGE ME FOR IT.
IT WAS TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL AND LIKE YOU SAID DANGEROUS. NO WAY COULD I HAVE CONTINUED ON THE 1ST DAY OF OUR VAC.
I WAS NEAR CAMPING WORLD AND THEY WOULD NOT EVEN LOOK AT IT. WE WERE STRANDED.
HE SAID IT WOULD BE A COUPLE OF DAYS AND WE HAD TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.
NEEDLESS TO SAY CAMPING WORLD IS NOT LONGER ON MY PLACES TO VISIT.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

BILL,III

I had the same problem and i ran a new line from the altenator to the start batt. not the coach batt. and it worked fine after that. for some reason the last mechanic put the altenator charging the wrong battery and it wasnt charging properly and we had a problem with the selinoids at that switch the batt power back and fourth beetween the coach and starter batt.
Re: 1978 Dodge RV with 440 engine xzedd 10-12-10
If you replaced the cables too then sounds like your battery isolator. go find it (if you dont know its a big heat-sink lookin thing with 3 big terminals on it. its just 2 giant diodes pointed away from each other.) jump the terminals from center (alternator) to one of the other ones (engine system and cabin system). you should see a small spark on either one if they both have good batteries. if you have no isolator and have just a solenoid then your engine/vehicle system should be charging. if it isn't then you've got an ignition problem. (check fuses and fuse-able links)
