I have a 1987 Sunstream Motor home with a 454 engine that the previous owner put headers on. The problem is heat from the headers destorys the spark plug wires in less than 500 miles. Does anyone know of shields or heat resistant plug wires?
Hi Ed I have an 84 Winnebago and what I did with mine is put in two 5 inch aluminum ducts and ran them from the grill over the rad and down onto each cylinder bank. This helped to purge the heat that stayed trapped under the dog house.
Hi,
I have 454 running in the rod with headers, I have run higher grade plugs which means more heat, but at this stage no damage can be seen on the leads. My mate is also running 454 in his rod with again higher grader plugs and no issues. I dont think your problem is headers if anything they would release the heat.
Let us know I would check the battery output along with the charge from the dissy.
Ed go to jegs.com,summitracing.com or autozone look for Accel boot guards. I have an 88 pace arrow with 454 and headers I also bought good high performance plug wire from them to no problem. the guards slip over plug wire and boot and are about 6 inches long I took a tie rap and snuged it down at the top of the bbot guard works real good.
I had a series of burnt starter wires because of the heat from a Banks power pack headers. My coach is a 1999 Pace Arrow with the 454. I had it repaired and drove 100 miles and the wires were burnt again and couldn't start the darn thing. I had a series of repairs like this about a year and a half ago. Had good luck until now with the 2 episodes of burnt wires. Anyone solve this type of problem? Should I put the stock headers back on?
Excess milage. the problem is caused from engine blow by. oil from the crankcase finds its way into the combustion chamber and ignites with the fuel but not burning as fast and starts a fore storm in the head above each piston. result; glowing headers
