454 starting problem	Jim Walker	2-22-07
1999 coachmen with 454 J chevy engine. Tried to start vehicle, engine started then immediately died. Starter would no longer work. Tried to jump start with no result. Charged battery, no result. Had battery checked, OK. Reworked ground, no result. Replaced starter, no result. When I turn the vehicle on, I hear the fuel pump energize then when I turn to start the starter clicks and the speedometer starts moving and gets close to 30 MPH before I can key off. HELP!!

Does the starter make just one click or does it just keep clicking.There maybe a relay circuit in the starter solenoid circuit that is droping voltage to the solenoid.If you can safely measure voltage to the solenoid wire it should be around 11volts or so.If its much below 10 volts it may not pull in.If the clicking noise is constant it may be what is causing the speedometer to read 30 mph. You may have a bad hold in coil inside the solenoid,if it is weak or open circuit,it will pull in but jump right back out and start all over again causing the clicking noise.If all connections are clean and battery is up I would guess a relay or bad solenoid but try to check voltages first befor replacing any parts. Ues an old VOM type metter with the needle face. The new type with digital read may be worthless with voltages jumping around with the solenoid jumping in and out causing voltage to go up and down. MIKE
