Ford 460 starter Richard P Nordel 12-30-06
1994 Ford 460 F Super Duty Motor Home Chassis. Replaced my starter with a napa replacement, replaced the engine battery first with a new one because the cranking speed would barely get the engine started when cold and after a warm up had to wait for an hr in order to restart, the engine acted like the engine was dragging.Pulled the plugs and the engine seemed to turn very free. It is cold and wet on the coast of Or. now, can not imagine what wiil happen when it warms up,when gaseing up would have to wait till cooled off to move on.

Sounds like you have some resistance in the cable circuit. Are the cables in good condition no corrosion near connectors and clean connections. Also check the ground cable connection from neg. battery to the frame, any corrosion there may cause a voltage drop and poor starting. When temp.gets very low battery output current may drop off some, causing slow cranking.Do you have a volt meter to check some voltages with? If cleaning connections and checking cables do not help checking voltages will help pinpoint problems. Also may have resistance in the starter solenoid that is in circuit form batt.pos.thru solenoid to starter. Just a few ideas you can check out. Good Luck MIKE

Thanks Mike I was in the process of changing cabels, tried first your suggestion and concentrated on the ground side as this was the hardest to do as it requires getting under the old motor home and sure enough the flexstrap to the engine block and the common connection on the frame was all in poor shape I quess 7yr's spent as camp host for ca state parks on the coast during the 6mo winters spent at the coast did no good. Again thank's it now sounds like the starter would take us instead of needing the engine Rick

I have a 1989 Ford Class A motorhome. It started at 7 am. At noon it will not start or turnover just clicks. The battery and cables are all good. Even with a power boost, it will just click.
What would the problem be? Would it be the starter? Does it have a solenoid?
