460 Ford Starter Mat Goodman 12-11-06
I have a 1990 Safari Serengetti Hi Tech Edition, ran it 4 weeks ago with no problem, tried to start it last week after a cold spell in the weather. lights, gauges, heater fan, etc. all come on, nothing when you try the starter. I read Roger's similar posting, checked the battery and replaced with 900CCA new battery, cleaned the negative ground cable attach point to the block, tapped the starter and starter selenoid. I have checked all the fuses etc. Is there anything else in the system that would isolate the power to the starter? I do not know if I have amperage to the starter, but I have tried everything else I can think of and still nothing when you turn the key. Am I down now to replacing the starter on the unit? Any info much appreciated before I start with the knuckle busting under the coach. PS even jumping the coach batterys to the engine does no good as well.
Thx
Mat Goodman

What motor do you have in the coach. If it is a Ford you will find a solenoid connected in series with the cable to the starter.See if you can hear or feel it click when turning the key to start. If no click get a test light probe and check at the small terminal pos. for voltage with key in start position. If no voltage unhook small wire and try again. If no voltage, sounds like a problem in switch or neutral position switch.Another test make sure tranny is in park position, then run a test jumper from batt.pos to small positive terminal on solenoid, solenoid should pull in and starter should start cranking. Some older solenoids can be activated by pushing on a button on the bottom side. Good luck Mike

Well maybe thats the solenoid that connects the chassis and house batterys to to jump start.Where do the two pos.cables hooked to the solenoid come from.? Sounds like thats the jump solenoid. If you got sparks on the small terminal or the large cable? One more thing to watch for if not exact Ford solenoid is some after market solenoids may have one side of the coil wires {small terminals} internialy grounded so you might check old coil. Also you may have blown a fuse or a fuseable link.I will look in some Ford books and review and maybe come up with something. My rig is a P30 chevy so a bit different. Okay, FINALLY, found the culprit. There is indeed another solenoid which was nicely stuck down by the hyd leveler pump which is actually the starter solenoid, I pulled it off, went to the shop and it tested good. (I replaced it anyway) and vwalla!!!Fire in the hole. Battery, starter, coach jump solenoid and starter Solenoid and back in business. Thanks for help, appreciate you
Mat

Thx Mike, I checked the power to the positive side of the firewall solenoid and it was hot, I could not check the small leads in the start position as I am by myself, however, I jumped from the positive side of the solenoid to the other large post, nothing, so I went down and hooked a jump from positive side of battery direct to the starter, lots of sparks, no turn on the starter, I pulled the starter and took it to the shop, it tested bad, so I replaced the starter. Hooked everything up and nothing again. So I replaced the fireweall solenoid. when I hooked up the positive side of the solenoid I got a spark off the wrench(presumably touching ground even with the chasis battery disconnected. Still I have nothing. I disconnected the chasis battery positive lead and sure enough, I still have power to the positive side of the firewall solenoid. I thought the coach battery bank was stuck on "jump" and when you push the dash coach jump switch I do not get a click any more like it used to do when you pushed it. However, with the chasis battery disconnected, I do not have dash lights, gauge lights, etc. and no power with the key or when you jump the coach battery switch. I do not understand why I have juice on the battery side of the solenoid without the chasis battery hooked up and with new battery, new starter and new solenoid I am getting even more baffled. There are two cables coming into the positive side of the solenoid on the firewall and two coming off the other side large post. Any ideas at this point.
thx Mat
