I am looking at purchasing a used class A in the range of 30-33'. The coaches I am looking at are from the late 80's early nineties as I have a limited budget.
My two questions are is realistically how many miles can one expect from a 454 or 460 before it needs some major work or rebuild? What type of actual mileage can I expect to get out of such a unit?
I have a 35 ft with a 454 it went @ 65k before a total overhaul but since then its had more power and reliability as i put quality parts and only good products in it but take that as you will engines will last as long as you take meticulous care of them, and perform routine maintenance.
I have a 1997 Damon Challenger with a 454 in it. At 30,000 miles I put a Banks Powerpack exhaust on it. Best thing I ever did. Took a trip last July to the mountains in Carolina, Tennesee and Kentucky. On a six or seven percent grade I was passing deisel pushers doing 25 up the grade at 45mph.
Only problem with the older 454 is exhaust leaks at the manifold where it meets the block. That is why I went ahead and put the powerpack header system on it. No more exhaust leak, ever! Lifetime warranty.
