The in line 6 71 was about as reliable as you get. They have a more limited life span than current heavy diesels.
Current stuff can run a million miles between rebuilds, that 6-71 more like 350,000 miles to, with carefull use and excelent maint, 500,0000 miles. There is the old joke about the detroit deisel being the best way to turn fuel into noise and oil slicks ever invented. But the truth is they tend to be very reliable and with an owner willing to stay on top of the leaks a very good engine. It will not deliver the fuel economy a curent similar power unit will probably burn 15% to 30% more fuel. But for the cost of a repower you can buy about a hundred thousnd miles of fuel.
Good Luck
The above answer is quite good. Another point I might add is that they seem to be quite sensitive to high altitude. They are considered to be a naturally aspirated engine even though they have what is sometimes called a supercharger on the side of them as standard equipment. The blower is actually only used as an exhaust scavenger and not a supercharger. The engine is probably rated at 238 HP at SEA LEVEL and you can expect a minimum loss of 3% off of that for each 1,000 ft of altitude.

I was in the Navy for a long time we used them-when i was on Navy tugs we had 2 for 100 kw generators and they performed flawless-the Jabsco water pumps were easy rebuilds--just replace the rubber impeller.a go.keeping oil clean and filters clean---will make it last much better too.
I wish you the best---
