Overheating-Bounder Randy Green 7-1-01
We bought an 1988 34 foot P-30 that had been sitting for 2 years with a 454 California pollution (twin air pumps) no catalitic converters. Leaving CA, over heating was a problem (boiling). I removed the thermastat, refilled the water and drove to TX. The factory gage was broken. I installed a new S/W electric gage. It said the water temp was 240 degrees at idle. So I changed to a S/W mechanical gage. It read the same. I then tested the water and found there was exhaust fumes in the water. So I then replaced the head gaskets and new thermastat 105 degrees; no relief. the next thing I did I had a new high flow core installed in my radiator; still no relief. So last but not least I installed a new water pump and fan clutch; still running about 240 degrees. So I drained the 50/50 mix and refilled with water; now it seems to run about 225-230 degrees. I am still not happy with this temp. I have owned 454's all my life and have never had this kind of problem. Also I left the a/c condenser/oil cooler out. But I installed a auxillary oil cooler and a auxillary trans cooler. This motorhome came with twin electric fans that arm a 217 degrees and go off at 230 degrees. I don't really know what else to do, short of removing the air pumps and related items. I thought there might have been an exhaust blockage and I went ahead and changed the mufflers. Does anyone have any suggestion about this major problem? We have yet to enjoy the motorhome since we bought it and would like to use it soon. Thanks Randy
