I have an 1977 Apollo with a dodge 440 engine. The engine would not start so I have replaced an electric fuel pump that replaced the manual one and had the holley carb redone.
At first it was not getting any gas then with the changes the engine will start and then die. If you have the engine off and press the gas pedal you can see gas streaming out. If the fuel filter was bad could this cause the engine to start but die? It acts like it is not getting any gas to keep it running.
Check for spark, it sounds like the balast resistor has failed. Check on the fire wall where all the other electricl junk is, you are looking for a ceramic object 4 inches or slightly less long bolted to the bulkhead with four or more rarely two wires to it. it lowers the coiul voltage in the run position. Notorious for failing at inopertune times if it is the problem buy two and carry a spare.
Good Luck
Thanks Bubba,
would that make it so that it would start but not run. I was thinking it might be a gas problem. I was going to replace the gas filter again. the engine turns over and starts great but dies. If the spark plugs were bad would that start it and then not run or just run bad.
thanks
The balast resistor is the problem as long as the engine starts and imediatly quits when you release the key to the run position. If it chugs and shakes you probably have another problem that could be related to bad coil, bag plugs, bad rotor, bad carb problem probably dirty inside and in need of tear down and rebuild. Or my all time favorite a pluged air cleaner, remember to remove the plastic bag from the air cleaner after steaming engine bay, (Real story), I have also seen plugged exshaust cause this symptom (kids put sand up it but it could be a colapsed mufler or other sabotage)and finally the critter nest in the air intake plumbing.
Intake and exhaust plugging cause a start die more often than anything else.
Even if its not the balast resistor, find yours, get a spare and carry it. It will fail somday after dark in the middle of nowhere.
Good Luck
I also have a 1977 Apollo motor home. The manuel fuel pump was replaced with an electric carter model. It used to have to turn over for 10 to 15 seconds to prime the carb after sitting. Now that problem is fixed. I turn the key to accessory and let the pump operate for 20 seconds, I then pump the gas 8 times and she fires right up. I did have to install a heat shield below the fuel pump because of some vapor lock last summer. That fixed the problem. I used thick cookie sheet and mounted it below the pump and also wrapped the fuel lines in alumium foil.
