Chevy 454 starting problem Dan Armstrong 8-20-01
Have a '85 Southwind with Chevy 454 and 3 speed auto. Have to move shift lever from Park to Drive and back and forth to get starter motor to turn over. I suspect there is a "neutral switch" out of alignment. Any idea how I can get this fixed, or "hot wire" the switch?

The neutral start/backup light switch is located at the base of the steeing column at the floorboard. The mounting holes are slotted for adjustment. There is a proceedure for adjustment, I've found the easiest way is to put the lever in "R", turn on the key, have someone stand at the rear and tell you when the backup lights are lit. If this doesn't fix the problem, replace the switch. The switch contacts carry too much current because GM doesn't use a relay to take the load off them. Drop me an email if you'd like a simple fix for this fault.
