454 Timing Spec Gaetan Lavoie 8-26-01
Would anyone know what is the recommended procedure for timing the GM 454 (1988). There is a timing scale ounted on the timing chain cover toward the bottom and there is also another timing scale located toward the top of the timing chain cover. Using the bottom timing scale and spark plug no 1 does not work and the top timing scale can not be seen with everything else in the way. So what is the spark plug to use and how many degrees BTDC should I adjust the 454?

with the vacuum disconnected and the engine warm, put the timing lite pickup on the #8 spark plug wire. The bottom timing pointer is 90* off the top pointer. Advance wants to be set at about 4*. then hook up the vacuum advance and check it again to make sure the advance works.
