76 440 Dodge suptters after Interstate travel BIll Caughey 9-4-01
I have a 76 440 Dodge M500. When it shifts into second gear after interstate travel the engine sputters. It will then smooth out and finally shift into third. It seems like there is no or weak spark or it is a fuel shortage or vacum leak. It has a new carb and a new ingition module.

The first thing i would check is , See if you have a pinched wire under the valve cover gasket?? be carefull this could cause a fire...

Suptters should be sputters, missfires, or cuts out Bill Caughey 9-5-01

I had a Dodge van that was rough on fuel pumps. When one got weak, it'd get through first gear but run short on gas in second. Appparently the fuel volume requirement was as much or more in second than first but the lower RPM limited its ability to pump that much. What happens when you hit third and try to pull hard, right before the point of downshift? Fuel pump plugged? Did you change the carb to try to solve this problem? New doesn't always mean perfect. Did you check/change the ballast resistor? God Bless, jd

Bill, I meant to say "fuel FILTER plugged"... I've heard the suggestion that we mount ballast resistors so they stay loose on the firewall. Guess the idea is that they can heat and contract freely and not crack themselves as possible if locked down tight. For what it's worth. God Bless, jd
