Re: Dodge 440 still hesitates by Phasers
Post New Message I agree with Kent. The dufus I got my motorhome from pinched the inlet to the EGR valve and bent the pintle. It hesitated, backfired like it was going to come through the doghouse any minute. This only happened when it was at operating temperature. Checked the line to the EGR and found the crimped inlet and the bent pintle. Fixed them and runs great.

Good luck.

Did you have timing checked, timing chain may have jumped a cog or is loose. When cold chain may tighten and when heated gets slack????
Well I've tried all the suggestions, new carb, fuel pump, fuel filters, plugs, wires, reluctor, pick up leads, dist. vacumn pump, ballist resistor, solenoid relay, charcoal canistors, rotor and dist cap,and this engine when it is running at normal temp it hesitates and backfires and just won't go. Help!!

If it runs OK when cold, but runs ratty when hot, then you can eliminate things mechanical and concentrate on why things change when engine is at operating temp. Things like EGR function, canister purge function, heated air intake, etc. For now, plug off the vacuum lines to the EGR and canister purge and remove the lid of the air cleaner and go for a drive. Let us know the results of this.
