454 exhaust manifold overheating harold morris 9-2-06
My 87 bounder motorhome has a 454 chevy engine. the driverside exhaust manifold is turning cherry red. It only takes 5 to 10 min. for this to occur. Any feedback would be great. thanks, Harold

All the big blocks like to run hot with just a little too much hold back on the exhaust. I'd start with looking for a restriction in the exhaust. A heat riser not quite open, a muffler with lots of rust inside, a pipe that's pinched. Maybe even a misformed or restricted manifold from carbon buildup. Sometimes it several things together. Rich

Do a back pressure test.any muffler shop, make sure you have the right headers, some years had a air pump for the exhaust.
