We purchased a 1985 Gulf SunStream 30 ft rv. It is a 454 Chevy Engine. We need to change an alternator belt and fix the choke. Plus we want to give it a tune up. But we can't figure out how to get to the darn engine to do the work needed. And we are 100 miles from a dealer who works on these. We can do it ourselves if we can figure out how to get to it (doghouse inside the cab between the seats- we can get the top lid off under the table but we need to get it open more and there has to be a way!- do we have to take out the carpet/ passenger seat and driver seat? )
We got the RV and we do haul a 16ft Jon Boat. I do drive this as my Boyfriend works on the road. I love the camper. It is in prestine condition all paperwork appears to be with it. We have taken it out nearly every weekend until the alternator belt broke. but it hadn't been used in 2 years and the choke needs work. Maybe even a carb job. Heck I don't know the mechanic part of it. I have 2 mechanics ready to work on it if we can get the doghouse open.

Thanks for any and all help!
I did ours twice through the years once from the ground reaching up in their. And the other time from the doghouse manipulating stuff out of the way using different tools, especially a flex drive. It just looks tuff but you can get your hands in there. Of coarse I work on foreign cars so working on the motorhome seems like plenty of room to me. Good luck.
No one really has much of an answer. One mechanic has bowed out. Another says that RV's doghouse is designed to be closed until work needs to be done and then u have to peel the carpet back and find screws and take up the seats to get to the motor. It sounds like it will take longer to get the thing opened (like a sardine can) than to work on it. I hate to have it done that way and I worry what he will charge. All this RV stuff is fascinating. Like some kind of unusual creature.
But it is so nice, we have a friend who likes ours so much he is trading in his fleetwood pull-behind camper for one. He likes the idea it all self contained. He also likes the idea we got one that is 20 yrs old and still in great shape, not so much depreciation to look forward to.
ty Ray. You can count on my passing on your experience. HEY? Wanna tackle mine!!

Ive never heard or seen that they are sealed and can only be opened if the need work. Somewhere, and you may have to peel away the carpet on the edges there is going to be a latch(s). I'd find it hard to believe it was sealed to where it was a PIA to open.
