454 engine removal Al Barnes 8-12-06
I have an 82 southwind fleetwood with a knocking rod bearing. The engine is going to have to come out. The local RV repair place says its extremely hard to remove this engine (says that it might need to be hoisted out the drivers door).

Is this guy for real? I thought you removed the radiator, bumper, and other stuff, then hoist the engine from the front.

Does anyone know where I could get the instructions or manual, so I can do it myself (with a little help from my friends)?

Thanks,

Al

If they still make Fleetwoods go to a dealer, call other shops for more opinions. Sure, you can go out the front if you can make enough room. This is a gas engine ? You could take off the heads, alternator, all possible parts and then take it out. It will be a lot lighter.

I am pulling our 454 out of our honey right now. I removed the bumper and drilled out the rivets to get the front off and pulled the radiator. Look at it real good I think most of these will come out the front with a little patience and time. I know one thing I am sure saving alot of money doing it myself. More money for other parts.

The easiest way to remove the motor is to remove the trans, then drop the motor back through where the trans sets. Then jack up the front and pull the motor from under the motorhome. I have done several this way.

Thanks all, I've never done a mechanical job quite this big but I believe I'll try it. I just can't justify spending more than the value of the RV to have someone else fix it. Any more suggestions would be more than welcome, as this will be a big job for me.

I have a 1989 Coachmen Catalina Class A Motorhome with a 454 gas engine that needs to be replaced. Can someone please tell me how to take this engine out.
