We just had the the 454 in our motorhome start smoking at 60,000 miles on 1 side. I tore the head off and #7 was full of coolant no obvious signs of the headgasket blown so I took a careful look. Here I seen that the piston wall had some scouring on one side could not see any cracks in head or block so decided to bebuild. So I am searching for best setup suggestions from the engine to intake to carburetor to exhaust while still trying to be cost effective. Thanks for any suggestions.
Ray if it was my rig I think I would put a factory crate engine in it.To many problems with local rebuilders, sometimes you get a good engine most of the time not. How bad is the scuffing on the cylinder wall.Cracks in the head may not show up till engine gets up to temp.Could have the head fluxed at any good machine shop usually not a lot of money.Good Luck and keep us posted as may help someone else. MIKE
The motorhome is a 83 vinW not sure on the crate engines. I am very famaliar with working on cars mostly imports. Was just looking for input on great setup. What works best on the motorhome for a good overall rebuild performance and mileage from the egine to the intake and carb. Thanks
Have been considering that but I am focus right now on the rebuild setup. What is best for horsepower and mileage on a carbureted 454 that is the goal I am trying to achieve.
I built a 454 torker motor for my 1976 GMC K2500. I was very impressed with the low to midrange towing ability and better gas milage than my old 350. My core motor was out of a 76 C25 PU.The first things I did was have the heads, crank and block boiled out and magnafluxed. The crank turned out to.010 on the main journals and std. on the rod journals. I had bronze valve guides installed in the heads and the bosses machined for Perfect Circle valve seals. The block was deburred and bored.030 over.
I went with flattop pistons and moly rings, an Edelbrock intake manifold and cam kit, CompCams valve springs and roller tipped rockers, Crane pushrods and a high volume oil pump, the engine was assembled with Felpro gaskets. The quadrajet carb was set up with the jets, springs and settings for a 1976 motorhome chassis. I used the stock cast exaust manifolds with 3" dual exaust with a balance pipe and Flowmaster mufflers. The result was an engine with 8.5-1 Compression (regular gas), gobs of low end and mid-range power and respectable top end. Good Luck, Ron
