1977 Dodge 440 motorhome starts and then immediately dies. Has good spark, new gas, getting plenty of gas,
fuel pump works. It runs for 1 or 2 seconds and dies. It started when I was changing the trans pan fluid. Since I do not drive it much I had the pan off for about 2 days. So naturally I forgot about this and started the engine to check the battery voltage. I ran it for about 30 seconds. Then I actually wanted to check something else and it would not start. I finally realized I was not done with replacing the trans fluid so I finished that. I am starting to think I caused my own problem although I can't figure out what the trans has to do with starting the engine. I think I may have an intake manifold leak. I also may have trans problems but I am not going to worry about that until I can start the engine ! I would appreciate anyone's advice.
Can you see if fuel is going down the carb throat when it shuts down? It sounds like your needle valve may be stuck or partly blocked and when the float bowl is sucked dry it's shutting down.It can trickle in from latent pressure after shutdown and let you start for a couple more seconds after it sets. also check that your tank is venting and not vapor locking your system.
I shined a flashlight down the carb.
When I opened the secondary I could see about 1/16" to maybe 1/8" of gas. Seems like plenty of gas. Today it started and died. It just goes vrooom
and dies, all in about 1 second.
My book says intake mainifold or coil.
Does anyone know how to test the coil ?
If the intake manifold has a leak, will this cause my problem ?
