454 chevy running hot Al 7-20-06
I have a 1995 Georgie Boy 454 chey when climbing hills the temp will get up to 240. Once I get to the top it will go back down to 210 to 220. I replaced the coolant.Normal driving it runs nomal temp. This has just started doing this in the past year.
Re: 454 chevy running hot mike e 7-22-06
Agree with Richard put OEM thermostat with factory spec. temp. If it needs fan clutch same thing OEM GM
Re: 454 chevy running hot richard 7-21-06
I would NOT lower the thermostat temperature--That will cause your engine to burn rich---your engine is computer controlled and Fuel injected---colder temps--will definately effect fuel injection
Do the clutch fan replacement-OEM from GM not some cheap auto part one--

if that doesn't help--have the radiator flushed which antifreeze are you running
DEX_COOL = "orange or Regular antifreeze---do NOT mix the two-
rich

Do you hear the clutch fan come on.???210 to 220 sounds a bit warm on flat land, but dash gages are not usually real accurate. My 454 winnie runs about 195.Clutch fan should come as temp gets up around 220.You will know it when it comes on,gets much more fan noise and sometimes even feels like engine shifted gears.Don't know for sure maybe new units use electric fans.???I guess you could look and see if it has extra electric fan.Has the radiator been flushed and new thermostat installed.Good idea if not.Just sounds like clutch fan not working. Good Luck Mike and let us know what you find as it may help someone else.

I have the same problem with my 94 Georgie Boy. Most likely your rad needs looking at. Mine is in the shop right now. 240f is way to hot & it should run below 200f under normal conditions.
Re: 454 chevy running hot Mike 7-20-06
Clutch fan not working properly, thermostat needs replace w/ 180 Deg., Radiator full of trash & road debris, fan shroud properly in place ??, and the only other reason I can think of is the transmission bands are slipping when in the PULL and causing to much heat thru the trans cooler, check fluid for burnt or low fluid...... Good Luck...

Same problem with my 97 bounder with 454 did the fan clutch fix the problem.

I have a '94 Winnie with 35000 miles on a 454ci P30 chassis and it too was running in the 240 range on hills. Normal level driving was still in the 200/210 range. After 10 hours pulling the radiator( and bleeding knuckles)I want to make sure everything is done correct this first time.I hope to never have to do this again. I have the radiator at the repair shop and it is pretty well plugged up so I know it was a big problem. I have elected to go the full route of new fan clutch, water pump, belts and hoses. It's a couple of hundred bucks extra but never a better time to do it.....

My 1992 with 92K miles was running fine at about 180 all of the time. I am replacing the water pump before a 5K mile trip along with a sick alternator and all belts and hoses. We pulled the radiator for access and found it weak so a re core job is in progress. I just think if there is any issues and you are going on road trips and not just 50 miles to your favorite fishing spot for the weekend that the water pump, thermostat, hoses, belts need to be replaced and have the radiator tested by a good shop. It could cost less than just a long trip behind a tow truck.
Re: 454 chevy running hot joe 7-4-07
My 454 1990 rv was running hot. Since this was a keeper, I decided to take everything out and installed new water pump, fan clutch, radiator, hoses and belts, and new 165 degree thermostat. Now in the florida hot 100 degree weather, it runs about 185, the temp needle below half. I suggest you start w/ new fan clutch, about $60.00. Once installed, you will hear a turbine effect once it engages.
good luck

My 1996 is running about 220 on flat & increases on hills i thought i might try a 180 & it would proberly run 200 to 210
Re: 1977 454 chevy running hot Cassie 7-26-08
My husband just got a set of gauges and installed them in our '77 Chevy. We had dummy gauges in it before. The gauges read about 190 normally from what we can tell, but get up to about 240 when pulling a load. This seems too hot... yet, the first time that happened, we pulled over and openend the hood... my husband was able to touch the radiator, and take the cap off. The water wasn't boiling in there or anything... any ideas on why this would happen? We're getting ready to pull some passes on vacation and don't want to spend our vacation behind a tow truck! Any info you have would help. Thank you! :)
