Hi All,
Just bought a old 1974 Starcraft 21' Class A and have a question about replacement spark plugs. I took out Autolite 85, but noticed they have about 1/2 the thread depth as the plug hole in the head. Went to do a compression check, and the tool would not screw in due to the carbon embedded in the inner threads of the hole... Had to go get a thread chaser and clean them, in order to use the tester. My question is: What is the proper plug for this engine, that I should purchase. I feel that the replacement should have a proper length base to utilize all the threads in the head, not 5-6. Is these 440-3 heads different than regular 440 Dodge heads? Would appreciate any ideas you all may have....THANKS! Duane Koss / Fort Sumner, NM
I know the heads are different on the 440-3 vs the regular 440 as I have heard from several sources. I do not know the proper plug but I remember that they were slender and appeared too small for an engine that size. Your local Parts store should be able to look them up, possibly under dodge trucks or the New Yorker. I bought a dodge truck repair manual and it does cover the 440-3 variation.
I have a 1977 Dodge Journey motorhome with a 440-3 engine. My owner's manual lists the RBL9Y as the proper plug for this engine. Unfortunately, many auto places no longer carry this plug. Many do not even have a listing in their books. The champion RV12YC is an equivalent plug that can be used. I've used it in my motorhome for the last 15 years. I'm very happy with the performance and upon replacement I notice the colour of the plug is within the proper specifications. Another plug that can be used is the NGK (UR4). Apr.7/07
