I have a 77 dodge motorhome with a 440 engine. It starts up great and will run with no problems until it has run for about 15 minutes then it dies. The engine will turn over but will not start untill is cool back down. Then it will start right up. I have replaced the coil, ballast resistor and the ignion module. Could it be the pick up coil or is it in the carb(vapor lock). I can smell gas when I try to restart it. I think it floods easy. when it stalled the last time it backfired through the carb.
When it dies does it still have spark.?Does it quit instantly or sort of stumble. Here is a idea I have been told that works but have not needed to use myself. Take a piece of coated wire or a piece of vacuum tube and wrap a turn or two around a spark plug wire. Now place the other end near the am radio antenna, turn on radio and tune off station and you will hear spark plugs fire. When engine starts to stop see if poping noise stops instantly or keeps poping till engine slows and stops turning.IF poping stops instantly look for electrical,But if keeps poping and slows down look for fuel. I found that the choke needs to be held closed till it fires up.....pretty common for older dodges....
i have a 30 ft dodge cruz air....same problem.....fires every time if you hold the choke flap on the carb closed......warm it up for 15 mins and it should be fine.....
my 78 dodge with the 440 has only 96000 miles on it...
