I am looking at a 1978 dodge mag xe car take is in an estate sale //it runs but i looks like the eng was worked on how do i tell if it is a 440 eng (i dont know anything about dodges) there is a 440 emblem on the fender thanks for answering pete
Hi, All the big V8's have the dist. in the front(383 400 440 and the 426 hemi)For the engine serial # it's either on the oil pan rail, below the starter opening, at the left rear corner of the block;ahead of the base of the Dist;OR on the left bank front tappet rail... CID is either second,third,and fourth OR third,fourth,and fifth digits depending on engine and year it was cast.1978 VIN plate 5th digit should be T if the car originally had a 440. Sorry there's no easy way I know of to be sure, with out checking the block #'s. Rich
To find out if its a four forty all you got to do is look down between the distributor and you will see a stamp on a plate saying it is a four forty a four forty is the only engine that has this hope this helps
