1994 454 Bounder RV back fires Doug 2-14-06
I have 1994 454 Bounder RV with 52,000 miles. Under load will occasionally backfire & shudder at take off. Gas mileage has worsened over the year too. Sometimes runs strong. Sometimes not. My mechanic can't figure it out. I now have new wires, AC plugs, rotor, distributor cap, module, fuel filter, catalytic convertor, egr valve, O2 Sensor, throttle actuator, ignition coil, checked fuel pressure and injector filters. Any other suggestions? My wife wants to trade it in!

Check to be sure the advance in your distributor is working freely. Since motorhomes are frequently stored for extended periods and the fact that the distributor is always exposed to dampness even though it is under cover, the advance weights under the rotor can get rusty/corroded/frozen which will not let the timing advance as the RPMs increase. This is a pretty common ailment in the 454's. Just remove your distributor cap and rotor and spray the weights with WD-40 and move the center shaft back and forth till they appear to be free. Also, check your EGR valve to be sure it is functioning. It can get full of carbon under too much low speed driving.
Hope these tips will help.

You might want to check the fuel filter again. Mine gave the same indications and if the tank was dirty enough it may have clogged again. After I changed my filter it acted like a new vehicle. Hope it helps.
Tim
