I have a 1968 GMC Carpnter flatnose with a 401 V-6 and an Allison MT40 transmission.Also equipped with a 6.73:1 differential gear.
I would like to convert the engine to something more modern for parts availability.I know I need adaptors for the transmission.Anyone know where to get these?
Will a road tractor rear work in a rear engine application? My engine sits backwards.
If you're just changing engines you shouldn't have to worry about the diff. If you also want to change gearing, a rear CAN be flipped to put the ring gear on the opposite side which will change the direction of rotation. I've never seen it done, so I can't tell you what problems you might run into. Rich
A couple years ago I bought the adapter, the torque spacer, flywheel, to bolt a 540 allison to a 7.3L. I am not 100% sure if the MT40 has the same bolt pattern that the 540. Also got the 540. If you're interested let me know that would run 1000. for all.
