Diesel engine for a P-30 chassis Matt 1-12-06
I'm wanting to convert a P-30 chassis coach from its present 454 Chevy gasoline engine to a diesel, mostly for better fuel economy. The only engine that comes to my mind as far as right size etc, is the GM diesel (ala military HUMV) 6.2 litre. I just don't think a poorly built normally aspirated engine is gonna pull a 33' coach. Anyone have any ideas about who might make a suitable powerplant ?

A 6.5L turbo with the mechanical pump would be a much better option & would be almost a drop in replacement.
NOTE: the 6.2L is not poorly built, it's over used & trying to pull a 33' coach is even worse!
If you want to invest the cash, put a mercedes 924 engine sold by any detroit dealer.

After driving the military version HUMV, I doubt it would pull well or very fast. Those dang HUMVs barely make 60 mph with pedal to the metal but can get up to 65 mph going down hill. Many people prefer the Dodge or Ford diesels over the GM.

I am embarking on swapping the 454/TH400 for a 2002 Duramax/Allison 1000. The RV is a 1984 Winnebago Elandan 30'. I have most everything to do the swap. I am researching fit and wiring now. Does anyone have any information on this?
