I put in a used 2.9 in my truck. The motor was running really rich blowing black smoke all the time. I replaced the air temp senor and the coolant sensor (two wire one). Also, the plugs are really black but not wet. I repalced those as well and no change. The engine has a new fuel regulator and I took my old o2 sensor that worked fine on my old engine and put it on this one and in still runs really rich and gets bad, bad gas mileage. Any other suggestions. (140 psi each cyl)

Re: 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9L howard 7-19-06
I have a 1987 ranger with a 2.9l V6, it seems to have a loss in power and after about 3 - 4 minutes af running it will push black smoke from the tail pipe, this will happen for about 15 - 30 seconds until the engine feels like it is going to stall then corrects itself it will seem to run fine except for a bit of a lack of power until it is turned off, once restarted it it begins all over again. Can some one steer me in the right direction. thanks.

I had the same problem
It was the O2 sensor.
Passenger side, ontop of te exhaust just infront of the catalitic converter.
Its tricky to not bust your knuckles.
I used a 1/2 drive hinged racket and wqas real careful as to where my fist was going when it finally let go. Slow even pressure and care and it came out. It wasnt easy but I didnt tear up my fist doing it. The part cost. seems it was around $30 bucks.
