Back then, would have been either a small block 318 or the very heavy duty 413 big block. The 318 was rated at 212hp and about 340lb/ft torque. The 413 had 265hp and 440lb/ft torque. Course, this is rated which is different than todays gross power. Good Luck, TomC
If the dist is in the front of the engine it would be a 440, if its in the back of the engine it could be a 318 or 360. If you can get under the MH and look on the drivers side of the engine block it has the engine size cast in the block as the last 4 numbers, 440-1,2 or 3 and 318 or 360. If its over 24-26 ft its probably a 440. I think they had retired the 413 by 74 0r 75. It will also tell you in your vin # on your title.
According to info I just looked up, the 4th digit in your vin# is the engine code for 1977.
D-440
E-318
F-360
J-400
The 5th# is the year just to make sure you have a 77, 7 being for a 1977.
