8v71 Detroit Diesel Ajulufo Ifeanyi C. 12-26-05
I have an Ingersoll rand compressor (rated 950cfm 250psi) powered by detroit diesel 8v71. I understand that the guy who sold the equipment to me had ealier performed an engine transplant. I am not sure of the model of the engine but I gathered that it was a 6v93 series that it had originally.

This engine had rendered me bankrupt as it had defiled all attempts by some quack mechanics who had managed to claim that they know all about detroit diesel.

I have worked on this engine four times this current year(2005) and it would not stop giving off whitish fumes from the breather (2 at the top cylinder covers and the one at the centre between the two cylinder heads.

I am so frusrated about what to do as it costs a lot of money on each engine overhaul since the parts are rather scarce and very expensive.

Can a nice person please give me an advise on what to do, please. I live and run my borehole drilling outfit in Nigeria.

You have white oil? Crack some where, block, head, or the easiest to fix the oil cooler, it can pass coolant to oil.
If you run antifreeze, you may live where it is not needed so the qualifier is ness, have an oil sample run, it will tell you what you need to know, check with any reputable shop thay will know who the labs are in your area.
Good luck

Ajulofo, from my experience with detroits, they have a LOT of blow by coming out f the cank case ventilators. I think you are saying they are white fumes, which is probably water. If so, check on the head gaskets.

Ajulofo
1) Check your breather with a mirror. If it steams up it will be water from a cracked cylinder head at the wishbone (the cavity area between the adjacent cylinder fire deck).
2) If the liner heights have been correctly measured, this engine will seldom blow a head gasket.
3) Also check the clearance between the cylinder liner and the block bore. I take it this engine is a turbochrged unit. These engines will develop quite a bit of breathing if the clearance is more than 0.002 inch. Even if it is not a turbo unit, it will breath considerably.
Good luck
