Motor overheating Bob 10-3-05
I have a 1988 motorhome with a detriot 8.2 turbo motor that I recently purchased. Had it out on the highway and it started overheating, pulled over and added 2 gallons of antifreeze. When started driving again, it started overheating again... tried to get to next exit but motor died. Had to have it towed back home. Could I have cooked the motor? It did start up again at one point but now can no longer get it started, it does turn over but just won't start. Checked the oil, there is no antifreeze but, looks like it is leaking out of the bottom of the turbo. Also, when it was running on the highway, it was blowing out white smoke.... any idea what it could be?????
Re: motor overheating kyle 12-16-05
White smoke is your motor burning coolant. if you overheated it bad enough you could have warped a cylinder head causing coolant to bypass the gasket therefore burning coolant.also a bad head gasket could cause your motor to overheat as well as possibly a cracked head.what happens with a cracked head is when it warms up the crack opens more causing compression to escape through the crack pushing your coolant out, what this does is your coolant will not circulate properly because the compression is pushing it out of the head, causing it to overheat. good luck
